In the end, Mike Tyson and his handlers got their way.
Mitch Halpern, named last week to referee the heavyweight championship bout between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson here on Saturday, pulled out late Thursday to turn attention back to the fighters.
Only hours before his decision, the Nevada State Athletic Commission rejected a protest filed by Tyson to have Halpern removed.
Veteran referee Mills Lane will work the fight.
It is believed to be the first time since the second Jack Dempsey-Gene Tunney fight in 1927 that a referee was replaced at the 11th hour in a major bout. ...
