AFTER one year of operation, a neighborhood organization in a Pacoima neighborhood has shown that committed individuals can make a big difference.
On Mercer Street, graffiti is reported immediately and removed quickly. Crime is no longer tolerated, and is reported to a block captain. A vacant lot that once was the location of drug dealers stands empty and unused, and will be turned into a community garden.
The Mercer Street block club is a pilot program of Pacoima Beautiful, a grass-roots nonprofit group working for a better quality of life in the northeast San Fernando Valley.
