Experts say that more than half of the nursing home patients in Massachusetts have some form of dementia.
Here are some tips when searching for a nursing home for a loved one who is suffering dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder:
- Admissions policy indicates all residents in the facility's Alzheimer's Special Care Unit must have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or related disorder. (A mix of patients with Alzheimer's and mental illness can be dangerous.)
- The facility should require the family to supply a detailed social history of the resident near the time of admission.
