IF the San Fernando Valley were a city in its own right, its city council members would know who elects them and would keep in sharp focus their goal: improving core communities such as Van Nuys as an essential part of helping the entire Valley.

With the power and money flowing through City Hall downtown, however, Los Angeles City Council members are preoccupied with goals that have nothing to do with the neighborhoods that elect them.

Nowhere is this truer than in Van Nuys, which is carved up into five council districts. The result is that nobody really represents Van Nuys - a community that needs to be revived for the Valley as a whole to thrive.
