The announcement Thursday that William Dean Singleton is buying the Daily News signaled a change of ownership but not direction or commitment to the San Fernando Valley and the surrounding valleys and communities.

It was this time of year in 1985 that Jack Kent Cooke purchased the Daily News from the Tribune Co. of Chicago. Just as Tribune had built on the traditions of the Mendenhall and Markham families, Cooke reached out to neighboring communities and turned the Daily News into Los Angeles County's second-largest paper.
