You have to read deep into the congressional fact sheet to find it. The real reason for this absurd, cold-hearted law that says Social Security benefits are not paid for the month in which a recipient dies - no matter how many days of the month they lived.

It's money. What else?

The government estimates it would cost $1.2 billion a year to pay that last month's check to the estimated 1.7 million Social Security recipients who die every year and leave the rolls.
