Once he was the outsider, the dropout, the angriest young man killing time in a library.
Now Antonio Villaraigosa is on the inside, making sure Democrats in California's Assembly - the largest block of lawmakers in the state - toe the party line.
As majority leader, Villaraigosa plays chief tactician, corralling Democrats for votes and cutting short moves to tuck Republican amendments into bills on the floor.
