Flirting with defeat, Monica Seles displayed her utter refusal to lose today, overcoming a gutsy effort by Chanda Rubin to reach the Australian Open final and earn a shot at her fourth championship.
Seles trailed 5-2 in the third set, then took over with sheer resolve to win five straight games and beat Rubin 6-7 (7-2), 6-1, 7-5 in a rain-interrupted match of brilliant rallies.
"Chanda's such a fighter, I'm very lucky to be in the finals," Seles said. "I just pulled it out by luck. I still can't believe it."
