With a ban on methyl bromide just weeks away, California farmers are counting on special legislation to prevent the state from outlawing the potent pesticide until an effective substitute is found.
Methyl bromide is used to kill pests and improve the yield of more than 100 different crops in California. Also, governments in important export markets such as Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Egypt and Pakistan require that many U.S. agricultural products be fumigated with methyl bromide before they are shipped.
