Cotton Mather 
 
   Even the greatest divine 
   had his doubts. 
 
   Late at night, he often 
   saw a twisted face 
   in the flames of 
   the winter fireplace. 
 
   It told him everything 
   was a lie: Bibles, pulpits, 
   and redemption. 
 
   The world was made 
   by nothing for nothing, 
   spun like a child's top 
   in pointless, crazy circles. 
 
   When the flames 
   died at sunrise, 
 
   Mather robed himself 
   to judge ...
