Carolyn Melton of Van Nuys received her first warning seven years ago: Lower the high blood pressure.
Gaining weight didn't help matters, not to mention the high blood pressure that ran in her family. But Melton, 44, also realized that as an African-American, she's at greater risk for hypertension.
One in three African-Americans develop high blood pressure, compared with one in four in the general population nationwide. The reasons behind this are not known, though researchers theorize the difference could be related to genetics, diet, socioeconomic status and stress.
