Did they make "Wong Foo" because they thought it would cash in on the success of "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," or because they thought Patrick Swayze would look good in a dress?
Either way, they were right.
Drag, as it turns out, brings out the best in Swayze - or at least some of his best. The clothes and the swagger accentuate his natural grace, while his Miss Fix-It role gives full rein to his capacity for sensitive suffering. If he'd been allowed to be sexy as well, we might have a real movie here instead of a mildly amusing, but neutered, fairy tale.
