To someone who meets Mark Knopfler for the first time, the Dire Straits singer-guitarist can seem almost lethargic.
Talented, intelligent and very rich, to be sure, Knopfler speaks in a lulling monotone that's so unbelievably calm the long-distance line from Nashville gives out a soft soporific hum the moment he begins speaking.
Knopfler hardly notices.
``I didn't come to Nashville to play country music,'' he said. ``Although every now and then I end up on a session, I have some very dear friends here and I love the musicians. The greatest musicians from all over America are here.''
