The face peers out of the cracked trunk of the cottonwood tree: a woman with a prominent forehead and thick features, her hands clasped prayerfully, a crude gold crown atop her bright blue mantilla.
She is La Virgen, Our Lady of Guadalupe, a carving created more than a decade ago by a man named Toby Avila, who died just days after completing the artwork.
Not many tourists see her in this tree growing in the walled, private parking lot behind San Felipe de Neri Church. She is one of Albuquerque's many secrets.
For many, Albuquerque is just a brief stop on the road to somewhere else.
