They knew Skip Hicks would run and the line would block. But when the season began, the UCLA Bruins did not know if Cade McNown would emerge as an elite quarterback.
They hoped for it. They wished for it. But they could not be sure.
Until now. Four games into his junior year, McNown is the fourth-leading passer in the Pacific-10 and the 13th-best in the nation. He has seven touchdowns and just two interceptions. He's making the routine plays and avoiding the crushing mistakes. He manages the clock. He audibilizes at the line of scrimmage and he uses every weapon at his disposal.
