It may not change Simi Valley's standing as the smoggiest city in Ventura County, but the city is buying four environment-friendly buses that it hopes will symbolize its commitment to cleaner air.
The city will spend about $1.29 million to replace four of its nine diesel buses with vehicles that run on compressed natural gas, officials said.
Although natural-gas-powered buses cost more to run than those using conventional fuel, they emit fewer pollutants and reduce smog-producing pollutants by as much as 95 percent, officials said.
