Pedaling in unison across the parking lot of Westlake Medical Center, members of the Lost Hills sheriff's station bicycle patrol kept a close eye on the crowd of 300.

At the request of city officials, the team of officers watched as residents protested the closing of the hospital's emergency room. The assignment was one of the first for the bicycle patrol, which got started about a month ago.

``The concept has been around for years, but we started talking about it back in January,'' said Officer Norm Campbell. ``That's when we started looking for funding.''
