Injuries to motorcyclists and their passengers in California in 1995 were the lowest in 30 years, California Highway Patrol Deputy Chief Roger Newquist announced Friday, kicking off Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

At a Capitol news conference, Newquist said there were 260 motorcycle fatalities and 8,690 injuries in California during 1995.

By contrast, the highest numbers in recent decades were 851 fatalities and 28,097 injuries, recorded in 1986.
