After graduating from the UCLA School of Art in the late 1960s, Melanie Taylor Kent wondered what she could do to make the world a better place.

``I was idealistic in those days,'' recalled the Westlake Village artist, best known for her serigraphs of street scenes. ``Maybe I could turn kids around in the roughest school in the city. You change one person, and the world is never the same.''

In 1969, Melanie became an art teacher at San Fernando High School in Pacoima, a school with many low-income students and lots of friction. ``Nobody got along,'' she said.
