The contingency work force continues to grow.
It consists of part-time workers, temporary workers, interns, people who work for out-sourcing agencies, contract workers, consultants and independent contractors.
A 1995 report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that only 5 percent of the work force is made up of contingency workers.
But other studies, cited by Human Resource Management News, suggest that figure is 25 to 30 percent and growing. I hold with the higher percentage, because the temporary industry alone is growing at such a fast rate.
