Gov. Pete Wilson signed a bill Monday making it a felony in many cases to carry a concealed weapon in public without a permit.
The measure, Assembly Bill 632, was written by Assembly Minority Leader Richard Katz, D-Panorama City and will take effect Jan. 1.
``This means streets will be safer,'' Katz said. ``Neighborhoods will be safer. It gives law enforcement a tool to lock up people who are carrying guns who ought not have them.''
The new law applies to stolen or unregistered guns and to guns in the possession of gang members, Katz said. It does not apply to registered owners of guns ...
