If Mike Leigh ever doubted himself - and the prickly, proudly unconventional filmmaker may never have experienced such thoughts - he sure feels vindicated now.
``Secrets & Lies,'' Leigh's latest slice of not-so-quietly desperate English life, won the Best Picture Palme d'Or prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, as well as the fest's Best Actress award for its star Brenda Blethyn. It recently opened in America to uniformly rapturous reviews.
And some are even suggesting that this might be Leigh's commercial breakthrough, since for all its raw emotion, ``Secrets & Lies'' turns out to be warmer and ...
