In 1776, just one vote decided whether the official language of the United States would be English or German.

If it had not been for that one vote, we all would be reciting the phrase, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," in German.
