The last thing California's struggling economy needs is a tax increase. But state Senate President John Burton, D-San Francisco, again is bringing up his proposal to cancel the car tax cut.
California used to have a car tax of 2 percent of value paid with each annual car registration. So a family with a $30,000 SUV would pay $600 just for this tax. In recent years, two-thirds of the tax was cut, saving the family $400 a year.
