The lyrical works of Richard Strauss are not usually part of the Montreal repertoire. In fact, the premiere of Ariadne auf Naxos in Montreal did not take place until 1946. This past summer, however, the students of l'Atelier lyrique de l'opera de McGill presented the same Strauss opera at the Orford Festival, under the direction of Timothy Vernon.
Overall, the production was a success, although both the worst and the best performances were on offer. In the principal roles, it was better to forget Gerda Findeisen's Zerbinetta and tenor Anthony Flynn's Bacchus. On the other ...
