Newly appointed Los Angeles Opera artistic director (1 Placido Domingo unveiled a Lohengrin featuring newly appointed principal conductor Kent Nagano in a provocative, visually arresting staging, courtesy of Academy-Award-winning Maximilian Schell. Aided by Dirk Hofacker, Schell called on his cinematic skills to fashion unforgettable images detailing German nationalism, both its Goethe-inspired heights and Nazi abysses. The opening tableau, for instance, with its diagonals of helmeted heads in silhouette against a somber gray, cut by an upstage beam of seraphic light, looked like a masterly post-Expressionist painting, thanks to lighting designer Alan Burrett. ...Adrianne Pieczonka has recorded her first solo CD, a collection of Wagner and Strauss arias, accompanied by the Bayerisches Rundfunk Orchester conducted by Ulf Schirmer. The disc will be released on the Orfeo label late this year or early next.
