An extortion attempt that ended with the deaths of a gunman and an innocent bystander is under federal investigation as part of a wider pattern of shakedowns targeting local Armenian businesses, officials said Thursday.
``We believe that it may be part of a pattern of extortion activities in the Glendale, Burbank and North Hollywood area,'' said Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen G. Larson. ``It is a serious problem.''
