The state division of Driver and Motor Vehicle Services may have been overly fussy in refusing to sell a Southern Oregon wine merchant license plates bearing the words VINO, IN VINO or WINE. But the state has the right to regulate what motor vehicle license plates say. The fact that the wine seller's assertion to the contrary has reached the state Supreme Court is evidence that the Oregon Constitution's guarantee of the right to free speech is robust.
