Navigation hasn't been the same since handheld and fixed-mount GPS machines have become a part of almost every boat owner's navigation station. Excluding atmospheric disturbances, GPS gives an immediate position fix that's accurate to within a few meters.
If the GPS is interfaced with an electronic chart machine, you can watch your boat move across the electronic chart, passing headlands and islands. But if you don't have an electronic chart, it is time consuming to keep track of your position on a paper chart using GPS latitude and longitude readings.
