Call them "Oscar Moments."
You know them when you see them. Moments in movies that hit your heart, bean your brain or punch you in the stomach.
Most movies don't have them. Some movies have more than one.
Take 1979's classic "Alien" when poor John Hurt's bad case of indigestion erupts into the messy birth of a parasite in his stomach. The movie won a Best Visual Effects Oscar.
Or look at 1982's "Sophie's Choice" when Meryl Streep's concentration camp prisoner has to choose which child will stay with her, and which will be taken away, presumably to the gas chamber. An Oscar for Best ...
