A crime circling cyberspace landed in Syracuse for the first time earlier this year, said city police Detective Chad Munroe, who solved the city's first Internet "carding" scam March 7.
Carding is a way of taking a valid credit card number, punching it into a computer program and receiving a list of manipulated numbers. The manipulated numbers are valid credit card numbers, with rightful owners who are unaware their card numbers have been released. Someone who obtains the numbers this way can buy items over the Internet without leaving much of an electronic trail.
