ON October 16 last year, Protacio Mamaril - a Bulacan vegetable supplier - was turning his service jeepney right from Commonwealth Avenue to an auxiliary road near the Tandang Sora flyover when he was bumped by a passenger bus.

The impact sent him careening to a group of vendors and ambulant peddlers, scattering his vegetables all over the place. They were lucky. They sustained only minor injuries.

But other victims of the reported 3,792 vehicular and traffic accidents occurring last year on the 10-kilometer highway in Quezon City were not. Many of them died.
