Houston has been the world leader in cardiovascular care since 1956, when pioneering surgeons Dr. Michael DeBakey and Dr. Denton Cooley first used the new heart-lung machine, developed at the University of Minnesota, to operate inside the human heart. That first year, the two Texans performed almost 100 open-heart surgeries.
Cooley founded the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston in 1962 for the study and treatment of diseases of the heart and blood vessels.
