North American railways continue to make significant improvements in the productivity and safety of their operations. This is evident in the evolution of special track work during the past 20 years. Service life and safety have increased while maintenance costs have been reduced and axleloads increased.
Transportation Technology Center Inc (TTCI), a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads (AAR), is evaluating recent innovations in turnout and diamond crossing technology. TTCI has developed several improvements for heavy haul services and three are near implementation:
