The counties of the West saw the largest increases in population of any region of the UK last year - as they have each year for the past decade.
The arrivals come mainly from the South East, and they tend to be older, richer and more independent than most migrants.
It is easy to see the attraction, not least the huge stock of good quality period homes, the pretty market towns and the stunning countryside.
But this year there are significant changes greeting new arrivals.
The most obvious is the impact of foot-and-mouth. Many businesses suffered hugely, and the long-term consequences are still unfolding.
