Mar. 26--ASTORIA, Ore.-- Dawn exploded on the Columbia River at 7:45 a.m. Monday as the sun burned out of a bank of low clouds and things started looking up for Mark Ihander.
Ihander had been on the water since 6 p.m. the night before. He had set his salmon net 19 times but snagged just three of the spring chinook coursing upriver -- and at that, each weighed less than 15 pounds. But at sunrise, ka-bam: Ihander netted four more hatchery-born chinook, including a 26-pound torpedo of a fish.
