LAST DECEMBER, shoppers got a pleasant surprise: deep markdowns before the holidays. But some exceptionally strong brands didn't have to dangle discounts. Coach is among the elite. Even in the midst of a recession, customers paid top dollar for Coach's buttery-leather briefcases, trendy canvas totes and sleek gloves. Consumers consider these "must-have products," says Lehman Brothers analyst Robert Drbul.
Because it didn't have to cut prices, Coach had a bang-up holiday quarter. Sales surged 12% over the same period the year before; earnings improved a little more than that--up 13%, to 99 cents per share.
