NATURALIZED WHITE CLOVER, originally brought to North America by European colonists, is a widely adapted and productive forage legume species in eastern North America (Gibson and Cope, 1985; Fraser, 1989). Currently, most recommended varieties originate from European cultivars (Gibson and Cope, 1985) and are not well suited to the temperate region of North America. Poor persistence can be attributed to its poor winter hardiness, shallow root system, and midsummer dormancy (Fraser, 1989). New cultivars with improved winter hardiness are needed for pasture-based cropping systems in North America.
