THE prospect of a debut album from actor Billy Bob Thornton might not, at first, promote an outbreak of excitement and celebration. However, Private Radio is not just another vanity project from an overpaid movie star. The 12 tracks, written and performed by Thornton, suggest that he is a narrative lyricist of serious intent, and his whisky-and smoke marinated delivery has a pleasing authenticity.
While we await his next acting performance in the forthcoming Monster's Ball, Thornton is on the road with a band in the UK, winding up in Islington next Friday.
