America's funny uncle has died. Whether you're 22 or 72, you could still think of Milton "Uncle Miltie'' Berle as the relative who knew no bounds in trying to make you laugh.
Berle, who was 93, made a career out of that desperation to please others. He put on dresses to do it. He walked on his ankles to do it. He stole jokes from others to do it, or at least that was the comic persona - the comic thief - he adopted and milked until the end.
Berle's death means there's one less of the comedy giants who worked in vaudeville, radio, TV and movies. But, when it came to TV, Berle paved the way for others, such as George Burns and Jack Benny.
