Redlake, Minn. -- More than 500 people gathered Wednesday to say a final "Mii-gwech" - thank you - to Roger Jourdain, who ran the Red Lake Band of Chippewa with an iron hand for 31 years and became a national leader in the struggle for tribal sovereignty.

"He loved all his people and he put Red Lake on the map," friend and family member Larry Aitken said in a eulogy for Jourdain, who died Thursday at 89.

"He wasn't afraid to go to Washington and say, `We need housing. We need education. We need respect.'

"He was loved by many people and feared by many others," Aitken said.
