KENILWORTH, N.J. -- Schering-Plough Corp. hopes to blunt the impact of possible generics competition for Claritin (loratadine) by asking the Food and Drug Administration to switch all indications and formulations of its popular allergy product to over-the-counter status.

Claritin generated more than $3 billion in sales in 2001, nearly one-third of the company's revenues.
