Chicago's venerable chief financial officer Walter Knorr has decided to leave city government after more than a decade -- first as comptroller and then as the top fiscal officer -- to join Salomon Smith Barney Inc. as a managing director in what market participants called a major coup for the firm.

Knorr -- one of just a few original cabinets members to still remain with Mayor Richard M. Daley since he took office in 1989 -- informed his boss and staff last week that he was leaving for the private sector. "He is resigning for personal reasons, it's a personal decision, and he leaves with sadness," said finance department spokeswoman Lisa Schrader.
