Joseph O'Brien, 81, and Donald Nelson, 78, still have crisp memories of World War II, though both nearly slipped into history without being fully honored for serving their country.
This week, O'Brien and Nelson, both of Madison, received their Purple Heart medals for being injured in battle more than half a century ago: It was 58 years ago for O'Brien and 57 years ago for Nelson.
Earning a Purple Heart wasn't a goal for the two soldiers, who were both young and enthusiastic about serving, but sensible enough to be a bit scared.
