MALAWI: Church leaders in Malawi called for argent international aid after government officials announced that 70 percent of the country's population could face starvation.
Food shortages have reached the point that "people are killing each other for a piece of bread," Fr. Piergiorgio Gamba, an Italian Monfort missionary' in Malawi for 25 years, told the Vatican missionary news agency Fides.
Gamba said the number of murders has never been so high in the southern African country, which has a population of about 10 million people.
