The art of pedagogy, or teaching, holds a special place in the world of fine arts and music in particular. It takes a very special gift to teach the gifted.
One of the most notable examples was the Paris-based composition teacher Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979), whose students included such renowned American composers as Walter Piston, Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, Roy Harris and Marc Blitzstein.
But in more contemporary times, one music educator stood above the rest, the violin pedagogue Dorothy DeLay, who died earlier this week in Upper Nyack, N.Y., at age 84.
