Ukraine's history is a story about people who persevere. The Slavic word Ukraine (yoo-CRANE) means "borderland." Because of Ukraine's location between Asia and Europe and on the Black Sea, different peoples traveled through the land, influencing its history.
By the end of the 400s, Slavic tribes from Eastern Europe settled in Ukraine, a land rich in natural resources. In the 7th century, Prince Kyi and his family established the beginnings of the city of Kiev (pronounced KEEV in Ukrainian and KEE-ev in Russian) on the banks of the Dnieper River.
