Every year, ten million people in the European Union (EU) suffer work-related accidents or disease. Of these, 8,000 will die. So it is no surprise that improving workplace health and safety remains high on the European Commission's agenda.
At the heart of this strategy is Directive 89/391/EEC. Adopted on 12 June 1989, this `Framework Directive' is the core health and safety legislation in the EU. Since then, it has been supplemented by individual directives specifying minimum requirements in many different areas, including explosion protection.
