CANBERRA, April 4 Asia Pulse - Prime Minister John Howard today wrote to the premiers proposing that the Commonwealth and states allow surplus IVF embryos to be used for stem cell research.
Mr Howard said the use of embryos for stem cell research would be governed by carefully crafted and important regulations.
"Only existing embryos (will) be available for that research," he told reporters.
"It is proposed that the consent of the donors should be obtained in every case where the human embryo is to be used for research purposes."
The arrangements will be overseen by the National Health and Medical Research Council.
