The overall medical-surgical price index for the fourth quarter of 2001 was up 0.24% from the first quarter and down 0.07% from the fourth quarter of 2000.
Of the 21 categories surveyed, 11 were up for the year, and 10 were down.
The steepest index increase was 8.80% for paper. The greatest yearly downturn was for bandages and dressings, which declined by 14.33%.
Annual variations for most other indexes were more stable.
HMM obtains its indexes from IMS Health, Plymouth Meeting, Pa. IMS surveys 350 hospitals each quarter and projects the results for the 5,300 acute-care hospitals in the continental U.S.
